A grand and beautiful place for multi-denomination worship, a world-class sacred music program, and all-College ceremonies.

HAVE FAITH

Hillsdale College is committed, by its Articles of Association, to provide “sound learning” of the kind needed to maintain “civil and religious liberty,” as well as “to teach by precept and example the essentials of the Christian faith.” In keeping with the latter, the College is building a grand and beautiful chapel, to be named Christ Chapel, in the heart of its campus.

Progress: 73%
GOAL $28.5 M

Named after the church in Philadelphia where America’s Founding Fathers worshiped during the Continental Congress, Christ Chapel will stand as an affirmation of Hillsdale’s Christian roots and identity, serve as a reminder that civil and religious liberty are inseparable, and provide a much-needed place of worship for all Hillsdale College students, regardless of denomination.

Christ Chapel will join Central Hall as one of the two most significant buildings on campus. Longtime Hillsdale friends Jack and Jo Babbitt have made an extraordinary leadership gift of $12.5 million for the Chapel’s construction and maintenance. They have issued a challenge for other friends of the College to match their gift by 2018. We invite you to be a part of this milestone endeavor.

A DEEPLY FAITHFUL COLLEGE

Hillsdale College is not affiliated with a church or denomination. But our students will tell you that their faith grows and deepens here. In and out of the classroom, Hillsdale students are engaged in religious activities and in conversations about faith – about its role in their personal lives and in the nation. Located in the center of campus, Christ Chapel will be a place where students, faculty, and staff can practice their faith as a community.

THE HUB AND HEART OF CAMPUS SPIRITUAL LIFE

Created for students by students, spiritual life at Hillsdale is as robust as what you would find at colleges with religious affiliations. Campus religious groups thrive here, as do student-led Bible studies in residence halls, Greek houses, and off-campus student housing. Christ Chapel will serve the many ways Hillsdale students live out their faith on campus.

A SENSE OF TRANSCENDENCE, NOBLE AND LONGLASTING.

The design for Christ Chapel was inspired by Central Hall, the historic focal point of campus. The key elements of Central Hall’s exterior will all find counterparts in the Chapel, making it an ideal architectural complement.

The Chapel’s architect, Duncan Stroik, is a professor of architecture at Notre Dame University and a leading designer of sacred spaces throughout the United States.

TIMELESS GRANDEUR AND BEAUTY

The interior of the Chapel pays homage to the quintessential English church, St. Martin-in-the-Fields—which in turn inspired Christ Church in Philadelphia. The Chapel’s 64-foot painted barrel ceilings, fourteen columns, wooden pews, and arched windows will give it a timeless grandeur and beauty.

WE GATHER TOGETHER

With seating for 1,350 and ample room for large performance ensembles, the Chapel will provide Hillsdale with a much-needed venue for all-college ceremonies and concerts, as well as religious services. Additional space in the chancel will accommodate a full orchestra and choir.

THE CHAPEL AS PERFORMANCE SPACE

WORLD-CLASS
SACRED MUSIC

The Chapel will establish Hillsdale as a place with a sacred music program with few peers. It will have two world-class organs—one in the chancel and a grand organ in the balcony. Dennis Fleischer, a master designer of spaces for worship, music performance, and education, will create the acoustical environment.

Music plays a central role in campus life at Hillsdale. More than one-third of our students are involved in music on campus, and concerts garner enthusiastic audiences. The Chapel will provide the inspiration and environment for our campus musicians and audiences to experience more challenging works—and more frequently.

“THE CHAPEL’S LOCATION IN THE MIDDLE OF EVERYTHING IS PROFOUNDLY INTENTIONAL.”

There has never been a great university that was not heavily concerned with the question of God. There has never been serious Christian practice that was not heavily concerned with learning. Christ Chapel will be a daily reminder of this central fact. It will be where the entire Hillsdale College family can learn, grow, and find inspiration.

— Larry P. Arnn, 12th president of Hillsdale College
